Hotel Valencia Riverwalk will Serve as Wedding Locale for “Badges & Bouquets” Contest Winning Couple

Touching love story wins the nod from judges for the fourth annual wedding giveaway open to San Antonio-area first reponders and fiancés

SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 24, 2016 – The chic and stylish Hotel Valencia Riverwalk will serve as the wedding venue for the couple who just won the fourth annual Badges & Bouquets Dream Wedding Giveaway Contest. Badges & Bouquets is a contest open to San Antonio-area first responders (police officers, fire fighters and emergency medical technicians) and their fiancés. The winning couple receives a complete wedding package valued at approximately $50,000. The lovebirds will marry at the Hotel Valencia Riverwalk on Sept. 2 this year.

The winning couple was announced at a special Valentine’s Day celebration at Hotel Valencia Riverwalk on Sunday, Feb. 14. Sharee Rugh and Nathaniel Irwin were selected by a panel of judges, based on their “Love Story” essay submission. Rugh is a State Trooper employed by the Texas Department of Public Safety and currently serves in Atascosa County. Irwin (a former EMT) works as a retail manager. They met when Irwin moved to Texas from Kentucky to help care for his sister (who is battling serious medical issues) and her 10-year-old daughter. His sister just happened to be Rugh’s roommate and, before long, Rugh and Irwin found themselves falling in love.

Badges & Bouquets is the brainchild of Tina Humphrey, wedding planner and owner of Diamonds & Dreams Event Consultants.

“I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for first responders and their families,” Humphrey said. “Both my husband and I have a number of police officers and fire fighters in our families and I’ve seen firsthand how they put their lives on the line every day they walk out that door. I always wanted to give back in some way to this community of self-sacrificing individuals.”

Every year, Humphrey assembles a team of wedding vendors to donate goods and services for the dream wedding package. Vendors range from florists and bakers to bridal gown retailers and the actual wedding venue.

CITRUS OFFERS VALENTINE’S DAY MENU AND SPECIALTY COCKTAILS

SAN ANTONIO – January 26, 2016 — Citrus Restaurant, located in Hotel Valencia Riverwalk, 150 E. Houston Street, is offering a special three-course Valentine’s Day menu for dinner on Sunday, Feb. 14. The restaurant will host two seatings: at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. for $70 per person or $100 per person with wine pairing.

The evening begins with an Amuse Bouche of Citrus Basil Crab Salad. For the first course, diners may select Live Watercress and Fennel Salad with Sweet Poached Gulf Shrimp, Grapefruit Segments and Black Fig Reduction, or Mushroom Lentil Veloute with Roasted Garlic Croutons, Fresh Micro Greens and Charred Shallot Reduction.

Second course offerings include one of four options:

  • Seared Scallops accompanied by Brussels Sprouts with Lardons, Vanilla-Scented Celery Puree and Myer Lemon Buerre Fondue
  • Mascarpone & Sundried Tomato Ravioli

Highest-ranking San Antonio hotel continues to offer “Timeless Hospitality” 

SAN ANTONIO – Dec. 20, 2015Conde Nast Traveler readers have named Hotel Valencia Riverwalk the #2 hotel in Texas on the magazine’s 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards Top 15 Hotels in Texas list. The hotel’s impressive score of 90.721/100 also earned it a spot on the magazine’s Top 25 hotels in the United States. With a ranking of #21, Hotel Valencia was one of only three Texas hotels to be recognized as one of the Top 25 hotels in the nation.

More than 128,000 travelers took part in the 28th annual Readers’ Choice Awards survey—the most in its history—submitting millions of ratings and tens of thousands of comments to create a list of winning favorites. The poll questionnaire contained lists of candidates in various categories (Cities, Hotels, etc.), and a minimum number of responses was required to be eligible for a Readers’ Choice Award. Individual candidates were judged on a set of criteria relevant to their category, based on a standard five-point scale: excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor.

Citrus announces Executive Chef David Gilbert

Chef David Gilbert, a StarChefs.com “Rising Star,” has been named the new executive chef at Citrus Restaurant and will be responsible for all culinary operations.

Chef Gilbert is a culinary talent with global experience including a tenure at the Michelin-starred Restaurant Vermeer in Amsterdam and the kitchens of the The Ritz-Carlton in Bulkhead, Atlanta, and the The Ritz-Carlton in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

In the great state of Texas, Gilbert delighted diners at Luqa in Dallas, and at Sustenio in San Antonio. For his work at Sustenio, Gilbert was recognized by the James Beard Foundation. Most recently, Gilbert pursued his passion of Southeast Asian cookery, opening Tuk Tuk Taproom.

Gilbertwill usher in a new restaurant concept and menu at Citrus in the upcoming weeks.

Chef Robbie Nowlin named Executive Chef at Citrus Restaurant

San Antonio chef, Robbie Nowlin, has assumed the role of Executive Chef at Citrus, our  award-winning restaurant at Hotel Valencia Riverwalk.

Chef Nowlin’s culinary pedigree includes stints with renowned establishments; The French Laundry, The Lodge Restaurant of Castle Hills and Las Canarias at Omni La Mansión del Rio.

This California born and San Antonio bred Chef’s keen eye for quality ingredients, paired with his vibrant, contagious energy is a recipe sure to put the nationally recognized restaurant back on the map. With a new menu launching Aug. 1, look for signature dishes such as spring lamb shank with piperade, pickled eggplant, frisée and a mustard seed glaze and “Foie Gras Mille Crepe” with compressed strawberry, celery, banana, Tellicherry black pepper crème fraiche and candied hazelnut. Chef Nowlin’s product-driven menu will offer flavor profiles that change with each season and is sure to please even the most discriminating of palettes.

Chef’ Nowlin’s story starts at age fourteen, with no formal training, he took a weekend job as a cook to earn extra dough for skateboards. Not long after that, he traded his wheels for sauté pans and Japanese knives. Flash forward sixteen years and Chef Nowlin’s impressive resume links him with industry icons like Jason Dady, Damien Watel, John Brand and most notably Thomas Keller of The French Laundry (the latter after whom he named his 3.5-year-old son, Keller). Local San Antonio foodies will remember that Chef Nowlin won the Chaîne des Rôtissuers competition for best young chef three years in a row.

“I have always liked a good challenge,” Chef Nowlin said. “I just felt it was time and that I was ready to be an executive chef of a four diamond hotel, especially one as sleek, modern and sexy as Valencia.”

When he is isn’t conceptualizing Citrus’ new brunch menu (coming this fall), the 30-year-old dad loves sharing cheese plates with his son, dishing about his philanthropic project Hot Wells, and tasting some of the newest creations by other chefs around town.
